The Complexity and Joy of Bi-Cultural Identity

EP. 03: The Complexity and Joy of Bi-Cultural Identity

Growing up in a diverse environment makes it a bit easier to find the connection you are looking for to nurture your sense of self and identity. Then imagine moving to an entirely new place where the culture is noticeably different from what you once knew. You suddenly become very aware of your differences and how the world sees you when your environment changes. In this episode, we talk with Charleen Parkes (Founder of Travel & Lust and Heard) as she talks about how she has navigated being a London-born Jamaican living in Spain, how it has allowed her to advocate for herself and others, and how that advocacy led to her latest venture connected to belonging.

About the guest:

Charleen Parkes is a black British Jamaican expect that resides in Spain. She loves storytelling and has gotten to do this a great deal in the past 15+ years in Marketing! She founded Travel & Lust from a desire of meeting new people and fully immersing into new cultures and different travel experiences. She recently founded Heard, a DEI empowerment initiative dedicated to amplifying the voices of marginalised and underrepresented groups of people. This project in particular feels like a homecoming.
